Andrew Cohen Memories

I worked with Andy this past year at InvestmentNews. He was a great leader with a strong, kind, calming and clear presence. One memory that stands out to me is Andy saying, “In some ways, journalism is naturally adversarial” — he would say this to me when I was taking heat for a story from a PR (public relations) flack who was upset how their client was quoted even though what we wrote was fair, accurate and of journalistic value to our audience. He was backing me up for my reporting and I always really appreciated having an editor like that (it is not always the case). He displayed great integrity. standing tall against the pressures of corporate flacks. What he said about journalism and the craft will always stick out to me — the adversarial nature of journalism especially in dealing with PR — what you write might not keep everyone happy, but that’s part of the job and often even the best work comes from that.

Andy was my friend, I’ll miss talking basketball with him and I admired how proud he was of his children on the fencing circuit. On his last day at InvestmentNews, he gave me a phone call, we exchanged pleasantries for how nice it was to work with each other, he told me he thought I was really talented as a journalist (hearing this sternly from him means a lot) and that he was hopeful our working lives could cross again in the industry sometime.
